Refinanced your car loan? The old GAP coverage may be refundable
Refinancing pays off the original loan, and GAP coverage attached to that loan generally ends with it. Ending coverage early usually leaves an unused portion of the GAP fee, and the contract's cancellation section describes how to request it. Coverage does not transfer to the new loan automatically — that is a separate decision.
What refinancing does to GAP coverage
A refinance is, mechanically, a payoff: the new lender sends funds that close the original loan. GAP coverage sold with that original loan is priced across its full term, so closing the loan mid-term leaves months of coverage that never applied. The contract's cancellation section describes how that unused portion is calculated — commonly pro-rata by time or by remaining balance.
The request, step by step
The request goes in writing to the administrator named in the GAP contract, with the payoff confirmation from the original lender attached. Contracts commonly describe their own processing window; a dated copy of the request is what makes follow-up easy if that window passes quietly.
Because a refinance involves two lenders, one common snag is the request going to the new lender by mistake. The coverage belongs to the old loan, so the paperwork trail starts with the contract sold alongside it.
What the law says
In general: federal consumer-protection guidance treats GAP as optional — a borrower cannot be required to buy it to get an auto loan, which also means a refinanced loan can carry a fresh decision about whether to buy it again.
This describes general guidance about optional add-on products. It does not establish the refund terms of any particular GAP contract.
Common questions
Does GAP carry over to the refinanced loan?
Coverage is tied to the loan it was sold with, so refinancing generally ends it rather than transferring it. The new lender may offer its own coverage, and that purchase is optional in the same way the original one was.
What proves the original loan ended for a refinance refund request?
The payoff confirmation from the original lender is the document administrators look for — it shows the date the old loan closed, which is the date the unused-portion calculation runs from.
