How to cancel an extended car warranty (vehicle service contract)
An extended car warranty is usually a vehicle service contract — an optional product separate from the manufacturer's warranty. Cancelling generally means a written request to the administrator named in the contract, which also describes how any refund of the unused portion is calculated. Early loan payoff and vehicle sale are the two most common cancellation triggers.
Warranty vs. service contract — why the name matters
The manufacturer's warranty comes with the vehicle and costs nothing extra; there is nothing to cancel and nothing to refund. The product sold at the finance desk — often called an extended warranty — is a vehicle service contract with its own price, its own administrator, and its own cancellation section. The refund conversation is always about that second document.
The general cancellation path
The contract's cancellation section describes who to write to, what to include, and how the refund is calculated — commonly pro-rata by time or mileage, sometimes minus a processing fee the contract itself discloses. A written request with the contract number and, where the trigger is a payoff, the payoff statement attached is the standard package.
Contracts commonly describe a full-refund window shortly after purchase and a pro-rata calculation after it. Reading which window applies before writing saves a second letter.
What the law says
In general: federal consumer guidance draws a line between the warranty that comes with a vehicle and a service contract sold as an add-on — the add-on is optional and has its own contract terms, including cancellation terms.
This describes a general distinction from agency guidance. It does not establish the cancellation or refund terms of any particular service contract.
Common questions
Where does a service-contract cancellation request go?
The service contract names its administrator, and the cancellation goes there in writing. Dealer-sold contracts sometimes provide a cancellation form through the dealership's finance office, but the administrator on the contract is the party that processes it.
What happens to the refund if the contract was financed into the loan?
When the contract price was rolled into the loan, administrators commonly send the refund to the lender to be applied against the balance rather than to the buyer directly. The cancellation confirmation usually states where the money went.
